London 2012: Yannick Fred Sekamana set to get serious
YANNICK Fred Sekamana will be the first Rwanda into Olympic action at the 2012 Games when he walks out at London’s ExCeL Centre on Monday.
The 18-year-old is set to take part in the men’s under-73kg judo on Monday as the first of the seven-strong Rwandan team in London.
Rwanda warmed up for the Games by basing themselves in Bury St Edmunds, helping to spread the London 2012 spirit while here, but the serious business is ready to begin.
Sekamana’s preliminary round clash gets under way shortly after 9.30am and he will hope to make it through to the afternoon to fight for a medal.
Among the competition in the lightweight event is world champion Riki Nakaya, but any sort of progress would be considered a good achievement for the Rwandan who lost in the opening round of the third Africa Judo Championships in April.
Into action for his second Olympic Games in the men’s 50m freestyle swimming on Thursday will be Jackson Niyomugabo.
The 24-year-old, who grew up swimming in the waters of Lake Kivu on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of 59 swimmers going for gold in the event next week.
His heat begins shortly after 10am on Thursday, August 2, at the Olympic Park’s Aquatics Centre with the semi-finals due from 7.30pm that same day and the final scheduled for 8.09pm the day after.
Neither are expected to contend for medals in London, with the country’s only realistic hopes falling on mountain bike rider Adrien Nyonshuti on Sunday, August 12.
