London 2012: Victoria Pendleton takes women’s keirin gold

VICTORIA Pendleton completed a remarkable turnaround to clinch gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Mildenhall Cycling Club gold member suffered heartbreak yesterday when relegated from the women’s team sprint with Jess Varnish for a technical infringement.

But the 31-year-old made sure her final event on the track before retirement would be a memorable one as she bounced back in fine style to beat Guo Shuang and Lee Wai Sze to victory in the keirin.

Long-time rival, Australia’s Anna Meares, could only manage fifth after fading badly in the latter stages.

It completed a golden half-hour for Team GB inside the velodrome after the men’s team pursuit four also won — taking Britain up to third in the medal table with eight golds.

Pendleton competes for the final time in Sunday’s women’s sprint.
