Ipswich Town fan RUSSELL CLAYDON revels in Tuesday’s hammering but is concerned about transfer window failures
ON Tuesday night I re-learnt why I love football. Despite all the pain and doom and gloom hanging over our club right now, here was a bolt out of the blue that re-sparked my love affair with Ipswich Town.
After a day in the office with my colleagues goading me through every minute about my football club potentially facing Southend United next season and Huddersfield beating us to Murray, I wasn’t looking forward to freezing temperatures to watch us host the league leaders.
With my boss’ ‘5-0 West Ham’ prediction, us scoring five tasted even sweeter, culminating in a pork pie having being put on my desk saying: ‘humble pie’.
It did indeed taste good, especially after the office ‘Ammers had been gloating away about how they were ready to witness a goal-fest.
I put to Paul Jewell afterwards there seemed so much energy about us, right from the kick-off. But it wasn’t just energy and desire that won the game so convincingly; pinpoint crosses, precise passing, clinical finishing and the dancing feet of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas being turned on.
But here comes the second half...Jewell said himself that “one swallow doesn’t make a summer” and took the words from my pad.
I tweeted if ITFC didn’t secure a right-back and a centre-back they had failed. Despite one great result, we should not let it mask the problems as they have happened time and time again — thus we can deem they are no flukes.
Jewell should be criticised for not having a plan B, instead of putting all his eggs in the Portsmouth basket, while Clegg is equally to blame for letting us end up in this position.
We said bye bye to Colin Healey, Shane O’Connor, Tamas Priskin (with a golden handshake) and young Jamie Griffiths and brought in one player. I hope 27-year-old Ryan Stevenson proves a snip at £50k but he is hardly backing up Jewell’s new policy of building a squad of young talent for the future.
It’s a visit to bottom side Coventry on Saturday (3pm) and a failure to pick up anything there will set alarm bells ringing again and a famous victory sinking into the sea (it was four years and three months since we last scored five at home - vs Bristol City). Our set-up against the Hammers, with Drury and Hyam shielding in a 4-2-3-1 formation worked a treat. Lets put faith in these players, as sadly, we haven’t got any other choice...
