SUDBURY remain pointless in Division One and surrendered their unbeaten home record after two seasons at the Cornard Astroturf, following a tough encounter against promotion candidates Felixstowe.
The home side should not be disheartened following defeats to last year’s third-placed team Ford and this loss to Felixstowe, but must improve in front of goal and in their pass selection.
Two soft goals in the opening 15 minutes made the home side’s task difficult, the first from a penalty corner after the ball was not cleared from the initial strike and the second an own goal as Sam Palmer deflected a crash ball past Chris Smith in the home goal.
Brendan Mayers put in another strong performance and good interplay with Ed Burton, and the returning Leigh Bevan saw a tap-in for Mayers to draw the home side to within a score.
The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the game and the red and whites needed to be hard working across the pitch, Kevin Monk and Brad Bosman both had excellent games, the former making two clearances off the line in the second half.
Despite hard work in the second half, the home side never really threatened the Felixstowe goal as poor pass selection gifted possession to the visitors frequently, who created a number of chances throughout, including a number of penalty corners, one of which saw a swift routine flicked home.
Tim Blackburn was introduced at right-back and had a strong showing, and in the last 10 minutes some good link play created forward momentum for the home side, but again there was a lack of circle penetration.
At the other end, Felixstowe had two shouts for a penalty stroke and one of these was awarded, but Smith reacted quickly and saved down to his right but he was unable to prevent the fourth – a fine piece of individual determination from the Felixstowe forward, who rode four challenges at the top of the circle and fired home.
Sudbury know they have areas to improve on and will work hard going into this week’s game at Ely City, who have also lost their opening two games.
