Gavin ready for desert trek

MARATHON MAN: Gavin Hockey

MARATHON MAN: Gavin Hockey

Gavin Hockey takes on a 4,000-mile motorcycle endurance test to raise funds for charity when he competes in the Inter-Continental rally, from Spain to Senegal, which starts on Monday.

Hockey, chairman of the Sudbury Motor Cycle Club, flies out to Almeira tomorrow, and will spend the weekend on final preparations on his Yamaha before signing on for the 14-day marathon.

He took part in the Lite rally last year, which covers half the distance and ends in Morocco, but decided to go for the longer distance this year.

This will be a real test of endurance for 44-year-old Gavin, who this year is riding to raise funds for two causes – the Dave Roper Memorial Fund, established to support young up-and-coming talented riders in the Sudbury Motor Cycle Club, and the brain injury charity Headway.

After leaving Spain the rally – which crosses the western Sahara desert – goes through Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, finishing in Dakar. Hockey’s riding number is 227 Team UK 3, and his daily progress can be followed on www.intercontinentalrally.com, where videos are available on a daily basis.

Donations stand at £500, and it is hoped that a total of £1,000 can be reached. Donations can be made at G H Motorcycles Ltd, 1 Challenge Way, Hythe Hill, Colchester CO1 2LY or Jim Aim Motorcycles Ltd, 147 Swan Street, Sible Hedingham, CO9 3PT, or by sending a cheque to either made payable to Sudbury MCC Ltd.
