Football: Melford maintain defensive record
Ridgeons League Division One Swaffham Town 0 Long Melford 0
ON the difficult Shoemakers Lane pitch an under par Melford managed to share the points without conceding goals, and thus maintain their impressive defensive record.
Driving down the steeply inclined pitch the home team could have gone into the half-time break two goals to the good, but were thwarted by two fine saves from keeper Wood.
In another Swaffham attack Polski turned in the box and his shot hit the Melford post and rebounded back into play to be cleared by Durell.
The Villagers came back up the slope and the usually dependable Daw got through on goal but sliced his shot wide, and shortly after this Melford again wasted a golden chance.
Taking the ball up the Melford left flank Lockwood swung his cross to the far post to Dean Costello in space, but somehow from close range the Melford wide man fired his shot yards past the post.
For a great deal of the second period Melford had Swaffham captives in their own half, at times Melford tried to play constructive football, but tried to overplay when the simple pass would have sufficed.
Twice Melford came close through Skeggs, his first effort a volley narrowly cleared the bar, and his second effort, a shot on the turn, grazed the Swaffham post.
Melford were only troubled by Swaffham once more, when Jackson found clear space and his cross beat everyone and ran along the Melford goalmouth, evading even the Swaffham attackers in the process. Despite the pressure, Melford could not find their usual fluency, and so the share of the spoils was to be their only reward.
Melford: Wood, Fleming, Grindrod, McSweeney (Bone 91), Durell, Capper, Dean Costello (Statham 80), Earl, Daw (Eggleton 71), Skeggs, Lockwood. Unused subs: Barr.
