Football: In-form AFC Sudbury are up for the cup

AFC Sudbury begin their journey in the FA Cup on Saturday in fine form after recording back-to-back league wins.

Sudbury take on Lincolnshire Evo-Stik Division One South side Stamford AFC at the MEL Group Stadium (3pm) after hitting five past Ware at home on Tuesday night.

It followed a last-gasp James Baker winner on Saturday in their opening Ryman League Division One North game at Redbridge, giving them a perfect start.

And Sudbury boss Nicky Smith is hoping to keep up the impressive winning form in the FA Cup.

"It is always nice to have a cup run," he said.

"We do not want it to distract from the league but it is good for the club and supporters and generates interest and money."

But he is expecting a tough encounter in the preliminary tie with Stamford, and will have to make do without target man Baker, who is away at a wedding.

"He is gutted but we knew about it. It is a big loss," said Smith.

"I know a few of the Stamford players and they have spent big in the summer, expecting to do well. They are a big, footballing side and it will not be easy. It will be a difficult test but we have a game plan we will stick to and we have had them watched in their last two games."

Saturday's opponents have had a contrasting start to Sudbury, losing 4-0 at home to Kidsgrove, before Tuesday's 2-0 defeat away at Lincoln Utd.

Meanwhile, versatille player Terry Rayner has returned for a third spell at Sudbury and full-back Nathan Speed has also re-joined.

Captain Craig Hughes should recover from a knock in time for Stamford but Lee Townrow is out for three weeks with a hernia.
