Football: Building works on a firm Foundation

Representatives of the Football Foundation visited King's Marsh Stadium on Tuesday to check on the progress of building works at AFC Sudbury. The Foundation has contributed £469,000 to the £2.1m project, described by director Mark Pearman as "a foundation for the future for children and adults".

AFC are constructing a new clubhouse, new changing rooms and a Grassroots pavilion as part of the community project which aims to put the club at the heart of the community.

The sale of Sudbury Town's Priory Stadium has provided some funding for the project, and this has been backed by grants from the Football Foundation, Suffolk FA, Suffolk County Council, Babergh District Council and Sudbury Town Council.

The new clubhouse, with a function room catering for more than 150 diners, will be built immediately inside the ground, parallel to the main pitch.

New dressing rooms for the first and reserve teams will also be built, along with a physio room, catering facilities and club shop. There are plans for a gym to be built in the future.

The Grassroots and community pavilion will be separate, and includes four dressing rooms for general sport and lesiure activities, and a multi-purpose classroom with access to the internet, educational software and other learning support.

During weekdays it can be used as an educational base for schools, voluntary groups, and those with special needs.

"We are being proactive in the community. This project is a role model which I believe will be replicated throughout the country," said Pearman.

Construction work will continue throughout the coming season, with completion expected in April 2010.
