Following AFC Sudbury's best result of the season the club is looking to make it three in a row against Rothwell Town on Saturday
BUOYED by their best result of the season, AFC Sudbury go into Saturday's home game with Rothwell Town, 3pm, looking to make it three wins out of three.
Last weekend a young AFC side won 1-0 at third-placed Slough Town, giving them only their second set of back-to-back wins in the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands this season.
Frustratingly, Tuesday's game against Bedworth United had to be postponed because of a waterlogged pitch at King's Marsh Stadium.
But manager Nicky Smith is confident his side can pick up from where they left off against Slough when they face Rothwell on Saturday.
"It was a very impressive performance," said the AFC boss.
"We had a game plan and it worked well with such a young side, that included five teenagers. They worked really hard and hunted in packs to close Slough down. Then we had a lot of pace when we had the ball. Slough is a tough place to go, so to get a win there is probably our best result of the season.
"Hopefully we can carry on this form against Rothwell and make it three in a row. They beat us in the first game of the season and we know they have a good team."
AFC's quintet of teenage starters at Slough were Daniel Swain, Daniel Emmanuel, Nathan Speed, Jemel Fox and new loan signing Kane Dobrowolski from Braintree Town.
Dobrowolski, 19, is a combative central midfielder in a similar mould to Sam Clarke, who is currently serving a four-game suspension.
But it was not just Smith's young guns who impressed at Slough, with veteran keeper Richard Wilmot also playing a key role for Sudbury.
The AFC boss said: "Richard Wilmot is 40 years old but he has been brilliant for us in goal this season. He's a good talker and is a great example to the young players in the squad."
Wilmot had been due to miss his first game of the season against Bedworth on Tuesday, so Sudbury had brought in former Southend United youth team keeper Nathan McDonald from Braintree Town.
Despite the game being called off, McDonald, 18, will remain at King's Marsh Stadium on an indefinite loan deal like Dobrowolski.
AFC decided not to extend the one-month loan of striker Craig Hammond from Histon, who scored a hat-trick in his last game against Aylesbury United.
Smith says he is in no rush to bring in another front man, with
captain Gareth Heath filling the role on Saturday. The AFC manager said: "If someone like Jack Defty (who scored 13 goals in 11 games during his loan spell at Sudbury) comes up, we will see what we can do, but otherwise we will stay as we are.
"With Gareth Heath's pace and his ability to get goals, he has shown he can do a job up front."
After missing the trip to Slough, Curtis Haynes-Brown is available for Saturday's game but Clarke will be serving the second game of his four-match suspension, while centre-back Matt Stace is still a week away from recovering from his ankle injury.
On Tuesday AFC face a tough trip to league-leaders Hitchin Town, 7.45pm.
