FA chief leaves door open for Ipswich Town u-turn
SUFFOLK FA chief executive Phil Knight has stated he would welcome a reverse decision from Ipswich Town to compete in the Suffolk Premier Cup following the Championship side’s omission from the competition last season.
The decision to withdraw from the competition was brought to light this week as when asked if Ipswich would be looking to re-enter the competition, on the back of former local Ipswich player Jamie Griffiths telling the Free Press last week he believed the club was making a mistake by not playing it in, Blues boss Paul Jewell said: “What is that?”
Before adding, after it was explained by a press officer during his pre-Middlesbrough press briefing: “I think when I was at Liverpool we played in something similar, the Liverpool Senior Cup.
“Is that a pre-season event? I was not aware of that.”
However, despite the Portman Road chief’s apparent lack of knowledge towards the county’s most prestigious competition, Knight responded positively, stating he would welcome them back next season.
“Whilst it would be nice if Paul’s main preoccupation was winning a Suffolk FA County Cup competition, I am realistic enough to understand that he has other priorities at this time,” he said.
“Suffolk FA would very much like to welcome the county’s most prestigious team to once again compete in the county’s most prestigious competition.
“Having our friends at Portman Road back in the LB Group Suffolk FA Premier Cup would be a fantastic boost to the competition, participating teams and grassroots football throughout Suffolk.”
