Emmanuel makes his Olympics debut
OLYMPIC DEBUT: Judo competitor Emmanuel Nartey
RAF Honington’s judo star Emmanuel Nartey made his Olympic debut for Ghana at the ExCeL Centre.
However, he was knocked out in the last 32 to world number three Dex Elmont in the under-73kg category.
“I was expecting to get through to the quarter-finals,” said Nartey
He started judo at the age of nine, after he and his brothers joined the local club in his home town of Accra, in Ghana.
Nartey, 29, joined the army nine years ago and is now a qualified tank crewman for the Royal Tank Regiment (1RTR).
He was keen to point out how much support he has received from his regiment at RAF Honington.
“They have been fantastic and have always been there for me, whether it has been financial support or time off to train,” he said.
The army ace has been training at the University of Bath for the last four years, under the direction of Major Simon Childs.
“You use every muscle in your body, so you need to train hard,” Nartey explained.
Trooper Nartey is now focused on the Commonwealth Games in two years time and said: “I will take a couple of weeks off and then the training starts all over again.”
