Cycling: Last man proves fastest climber

Cambridge CC rider James Ward scorched up the Semer course to win the annual Cycle Club Sudbury Open Hill Climb on Sunday.

Ward, last of the 24 starters, completed his ride in 47.9 seconds, three seconds ahead of his nearest rivals, although more than a second down on the course record.

Not surprisingly, Cambridge took the team trophy in 2.32.4 through Ward, David McLean (52.9) and Digby Simmons (51.6).

Host club Sudbury had seven riders taking part, George Hoppitt taking the best junior category in a time of 1min 21.5sec.

The climb, on Watson's Hill, was raced in cold, sunny conditions, and attracted a large number of spectators, many there to support club mates.

Open Hill Climb: James Ward (Cambridge CC) 47.9; joint second Daniel Zagni (Ipswich BC) and Philip Hetzel (Ipswich BC) 50.9

East District Champion: joint first Zagni and Hetzel; third Adrian McTigue (Plomesgate CC) 51.8
