Crushing victory is sweet revenge for Sudbury Rugby Club in London two North East league match

Sudbury 50 Braintree 5 SUDBURY avenged their earlier defeat at Braintree, with a crushing win at Whittome Field on Saturday

Braintree won the toss and chose to play down the hill in the first half, determined to take the game to the home side from the start.

But it was Sudbury who, after two minutes, gained possession at the breakdown and with a kick ahead from Matt Chambers he collected his own kick to touch down.

Braintree counter-attacked straight away and nearly scored with a move by their backs but were tackled on the line and the ball was thrown forward.

It was end-to-end play for the first period but Sudbury extended their lead from a line out just inside the Braintree half.

Richard Stephens collected the ball and sprinted 40 metres to score.

Braintree put together some good moves but were unable to finish until right on half-time from a line out in the Sudbury 22, a swift move through the hands of the backs and then touch down wide on the right by Green.

The first half had been fairly even but Sudbury had taken advantage of their possession when in the Braintree half. The second half was to be all Sudbury.

Matt Cooper kicked ahead and ran down his own kick.

The Braintree player was forced to hang on without support, giving Cooper his first penalty of the afternoon.

As the afternoon wore on the Sudbury backs seemed to have more and more time as Braintree tired.

Bruce Crowley scored with a move passing the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, ending with Matt Johnson and Crowley passing inside then out to score with 20 minutes played. Johnson scored one minute later when Woody took a quick throw in and the backs got going again.

For the last 10 minutes Braintree were reduced to 13 with an injury and one in the bin allowing Sudbury to enjoy the sunshine with some exhibition rugby.

Stephens added a second, then Mark Bolton and Bruce added 10 more points before the final whistle.

Matt Cooper had his kicking boots on with six conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 15 points.

Sudbury now have a run of four away games taking on first and third in the league and a big cup game at Southampton.
