Cricket: Pair's centuries seal emphatic away victory

Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship

Division One

Ipswich and ES 208-8

Sudbury 309-4

Sudbury handed out an emphatic 101-run defeat to Ipswich and East Suffolk on Saturday. Ipswich won the toss and elected to bowl. Initially they may have felt justified with the decision as Sudbury struggled in the early overs.

However the game turned around as Darren Batch took the attack to the bowlers and smashed his maiden division one Sudbury hundred in lightning-quick time, finally totalling 114.

Jonathon Phillips, struggling for fluency early on, began to control the Sudbury innings at the end and finished with a magnificent 132 not out, carrying his bat in the blazing hot sun. Sudbury ended their 50 overs with a formidable 309-4.

The Ipswich innings started badly as Jandre Coetzee dismissed the first three batsmen cheaply, reducing the home team to 45-4.

Zaka, batting at four, played some aggressive shots, and came within six of a deserved 100, however Andy Simmons dismissed him through an excellent stumping by the young keeper Adam Mansfield. Coetzee finished with another five-wicket haul and the Ipswich innings faltered as they ended on 208-8 from 50 overs.

Next week Sudbury host league leaders Copdock, who have been beaten just once this season.
