Cricket: Pickett grabs five wickets in big win

Hunts County Bats Suffolk League

Division Five

Acton II 74 Sudbury II 190-8

ON a fine afternoon at Acton, and in front of a good crowd, the home team won the toss and put Sudbury in to bat.

After watching his partner David Shropshire hole out early on, caught at square leg, Mills snr batted well before falling in exactly the same way.

Thirteen-year-old Charlie Ruffell played some good shots before being caught at fine leg, and after the departure of Chambers to a very good ball it was left to the two 17-year-olds, Mills jnr and Harvey to build the innings again.

However, both then fell with the score at 106 and it fell to club chairman Roger Troughton, with an excellent 52 not out, ably supported by the Arbon boys, Tom and Josh, to provide some impetus at the end of the innings.

The total of 190 was a very good score against some accurate bowling by an Acton attack containing four teenagers.

In reply, the Acton batsmen struggled against Mills jnr and Tom Arbon who kept the run rate down to two an over with some accurate bowling, much to the benefit of those wily campaigners Pickett and Troughton who shared eight wickets as the Acton batsmen tried to up the scoring rate in mid innings.

John Pickett finished with 5-13 as the Acton innings, despite a good effort from Craig Power who made 26, subsided to 74 all out.
