Cricket: One good display for crown and promotion

THE champagne is on ice at Sudbury Cricket Club with the club going into Saturday's match at Woolpit only needing half of the 20 available points to secure the title and promotion.

After last week's home game with Ipswich and East Suffolk fell victim to the weather, and nearest challengers Coggeshall lost to Exning, the Talbots could conceivably draw Saturday's penultimate match at Woolpit (2pm) and still win the league.

With his side on the verge of their first ever promotion to the East Anglian Premier League, Sudbury captain Peter Seigert was cautious of being seen to gain an advantage from calling Saturday's game at Friars Street off, leaving the umpire to make the decision.

"It was far too wet but we wanted someone else to see it, and of course, Coggeshall lost," he said.

But Seigert and his players will be praying for dry conditions on Saturday, so they can finish off the job on the pitch.

He said of their position: "It is just fantastic really but it would be nice to win the league by also winning a match, we do not want to win it by a rain off. We want to actually achieve the job ourselves and get over the line like that.

"It was a bit flat (on Saturday) in that respect, but there was nothing we could have done about it."

And Seigert believes that umpires should have a compulsory role in making the decision to cancel games, which can ultimately preserve a side's average and enhance their standing in the table. The alternative suggestion, of awarding low points for a cancellation, is a complete "non-starter", according to the Sudbury skipper.

"The danger is by changing the points system, and sharing points for a void game, you will end up playing on pitches you should not be playing on and it does not make for good cricket, you could win a match by winning a toss," he said.

* Meanwhile the Sudbury Sunday team managed to wrap up the Hunts County Bats League Division One title with two weeks remaining after Lakenheath conceded their match.
