Clare Swan win league
WINNING one table point was enough to give Clare Swan the Clare Summer League title.
Going into the last game of the season they had a four-point cushion over nearest rivals Long Melford Working Men’s Club B. Their opponents, near-neighbours Clare Cock, were in good form and took the game 10-5, but the one table the Swan won was enough to make them champions.
Second-placed Working Men’s Club B only had a slim chance to catch the leaders, but the Working Men’s Club A put paid to that, beating them 8-7 in a close final game.
Last year’s champions Stoke-by-Clare Lion finished in third spot with a crushing 12-3 victory over Cavendish Bull which, in their first season in the league, had already taken the wooden spoon.
Glemsford Social Club and Glemsford Black Lion, level on points with a seven-point gap from the Bull and the wooden spoon, met for their final game at the Black Lion, the Social Club taking all five points with a 12-3 win.
