MIXED EMOTIONS: Members of Mildenhall CC watch on as Victoria Pendleton falls just short in the womens sprint

MILDENHALL Cycling Club chairman Mark Burchett has spoke of his immense pride as Victoria Pendleton brought her glittering career to an end with a gold and silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The club’s gold member won the keirin before bowing out with a silver medal in her final ever race after a controversial defeat to rival Anna Meares in the women’s sprint event.

“There were mixed emotions and it was a bit of an anticlimax as everyone expected Vicky to win gold in the sprint but we are all immensely proud of her achievements,” said Burchett.

“What Vicky has done for cycling, and in particular women’s cycling, has been phenomenal.

“She’s done things that the rest of us can only dream of and shown that you don’t need to be big and butch to become the best sprinter in the world.”

Since Vicky’s sprint gold medal in Beijing four years ago, the Mildenhall club have seen their numbers rise by 50 per cent and Olympic fever seems to have hit the nation again with Burchett receiving four emails in as many days from those inspired by the Games who want to take up the sport.
