Andrew saw Bolt’s success

USAIN Bolt’s Olympic 100m gold medal winning performance will live long in the memory of millions across the world.

But for local sports fan Andrew Ward, the Jamaican’s scintillating sprint takes on even greater significance.

Ward was one of the lucky few packed into the 80,000 capacity Olympic Stadium to witness Bolt stride clear of the field to take gold in 9.63 seconds – a new Olympic record.

“The atmosphere was electrifying when the race started and it was an unbelievable experience that will be hard to top,” said Ward, son of Bury Town chairman Russell.

There was immense pressure on the defending Olympic champion to deliver in front of a vociferous and expectant London crowd, but Bolt looked ice cool as he silenced his doubters in devastating fashion.

“The buzz around the park was great but inside the stadium you could just feel the weight of expectation on Bolt’s shoulders,” added Ward.

“Seeing an Olympic record set at the home games is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity and that may stand for a long time.”

There are not many other nine-and-a-half second experiences that could leave millions envious but this is certainly one of them.
