Alice does the double

RISING teenage golf star Alice Barlow has added another trophy to her growing collection.

The 13-year-old Newton Green player has pulled off a remarkable double by winning the Suffolk Ladies Junior Matchplay title on top of the senior title she won earlier in the year.

The Great Cornard schoolgirl won the county girls’ title last week to go with the Berendt Jug she won earlier in the summer.

She also recently finished seventh in the East Anglia Junior Under-15 Girls Championship at Royal Norwich.

In both her Suffolk title-winning competitions, Barlow qualified for the knockout stages by her placings in the respective county strokeplay events.

In the girls’ final at Waldringfield, she won through to the quarter-final stage by defeating fellow Newton junior Eloise Aldous, who plays off nine, five and three.

Both girls are in the national girls training squad and recently qualified for the final two rounds of the England Girls’ Under-15 Championship, with Barlow scoring the best net round of the four-round tournament – leading to a handicap cut to six.

Barlow had a walkover in the semi-finals at Waldringfield because her opponent was unfit, and then faced five-handicapper Lottie Whyman in the final.

The Newton youngster was three up after five holes, but Whyman levelled the match by the 10th, following which the next three holes were halved.

Barlow then won the next three holes to finish three up with two holes to play.

n THE annual Ladies Open at Newton Green Golf Club saw Lexden Wood sweep the honours board.

Fourteen teams of four players from the region took part in an 18 hole Cha Cha Competition.

Teams from Lexden Wood took first and third place and another won the back nine. Second place went to a team from Frinton-on-Sea.

Nearest the pin on the sixth hole was Monica Dorrington of Diss, and nearest on the 13th was Jenny Heather of Gosfield.
