AFC Sudbury hope to keep the winning momentum going

A FRUSTRATED Chris Tracey is determined that AFC Sudbury can keep their momentum going against Beaconsfield SYCOB on Saturday, despite their last three games being postponed.

Sudbury notched up their best win of the season at high-flyers Slough Town on February 13 but since then games against Bedworth United (H), Rothwell Town (H) and Hitchin Town (A) have been called off because of waterlogged pitches.

AFC also hit a similar stumbling block at the start of the year, when their impressive win over Chesham United was followed by matches against Marlow (A) and Leighton Town (H) also biting the dust.

In total, Sudbury have had five games postponed in the first two months of 2010.

"It is very frustrating," said AFC assistant manager Chris Tracey.

"Every time we seem to have a good result, we either seem to shoot ourselves in the foot or have a run of games postponed. It means we can't build any momentum. But we had a good training session on an all-weather pitch in Braintree on Tuesday and the players' confidence and attitude was still sky high from the win at Slough."

AFC face back-to-back away games in the Zamaretto League Division One Midlands, against Beaconsfield SYCOB on Saturday, and Marlow on Tuesday, who have both beaten Sudbury this season.

Tracey said: "We owe Beaconsfield one because we put in a very inept performance in the home game, which was one of our worst, if not the worst, of our season.

"We haven't got a good record against Marlow, they always seem to beat us, so we will want to put the record straight on two accounts in the next week."

Beaconsfield groundshare with Slough Town, which means Sudbury will return to the ground that they won their last game earlier this month.

Midfielder Sam Clarke is hoping to finally serve the second game of his four-match suspension, which has been held up due to the spate of postponements.

Forward Blair Hammond has recovered from an ankle injury but centre-back Matt Stace is still two weeks away from a return from his ankle problem.

Striker Kevin Hawes has seen a specialist about his cartilage injury and will be operated in June, so will not feature again this season for AFC.

l The need to rearrange a host of games has meant a busy time for AFC Sudbury secretary David Webb.

"It's as bad as I can remember," said Webb, who was secretary at Sudbury Town from 1988, before the club's merger in 1999.

"Getting three games (postponed) on the bounce is unusual. We try to work in the rearranged games the best we can but it also depends on what games the opponents have to play. We have two Tuesday dates free

(March 23, April 20) but the clubs we need to play are not free on those dates.

"That means we have had to arrange games for Thursdays but everyone is having to."

AFC will have Thursday fixtures against Rothwell on March 11 and Hitchin on April 15, which means Sudbury will play fours games in the space of a week on each occasion.

The re-arranged games mean Nicky Smith's men will also have to play back-to-back games against Bedworth United, on March 16 at home and March 20 away.

The new dates for the postponed games are: Tuesday, March 2 v Marlow (A); Thursday, March 11, v Rothwell (H); Tuesday, March 16 v Bedworth (H); Tuesday, April 13 v Leighton Town (H); Thursday, April 15 v Hitchin (A).

l AFC Sudbury will be hosting guided tours of their new clubhouse and community pavilion development at King's Marsh Stadium next

Saturday.

Although the facilities will not be completed until May, the club are inviting all interested parties to view the work in progress, before AFC's home game against Atherstone Town.

The tours will be held between 1pm and 2.30pm.
