Jack Wiffen continued his preparations for the England Schoolboy Championships next month with a fine unanimous points victory against an old foe at Chalvedon ABC’s show held in Basildon, Essex.

The Sudbury Boxing Club youngster, who bowed out in the semi-finals of the national competition last year, took on Ronnie Anderson, from Southend, who had beaten him twice last season.

Coming off the back of wins the previous week, both boys were in good form. Wiffen had been instructed to box at range and not get involved on the inside, where the shorter Anderson liked the fight to be. He did this well and just edged the first round on cleaner work before finding his rhythm in the second and third rounds with some quality boxing that clearly won him the rounds, and the match.

Sudbury head coach Neil Anderson said: “Jack showed how much improvement he has made by his change of tactics from the last two contests and how disciplined he is by keeping to the plan of long-range boxing.”

n Wiffen will be in action at Sudbury Rugby Club on April 9, along with 12 other Sudbury boxers (from 5pm).
