UPLANDS Middle School under-13 girls rugby tag team competed in a showcase event at Twickenham, the home of England rugby, on Saturday, playing an exhibition game during the interval of the annual Army versus Navy match for the Babcock Trophy.
They had qualified by winning the Eastern Regional Finals, and were one of eight regional winning teams on display, playing in front of a crowd approaching 70,000.
Earlier in the day, the girls took part in a coaching session with some of the England ladies rugby team.
Although some of the girls were apprehensive at the prospect of playing in front of such a large crowd, they quickly got into their stride and produced a fine display of attacking rugby. The match was drawn at three tries each.
The atmosphere in the ground was excellent, and the crowd showed real appreciation at the girls’ efforts. After the game, the players were ecstatic at having been given the opportunity to play on such ‘hallowed turf’, and were ready to do it all over again.
