Rising rugby star Austin Beckett will be hoping to make an impact on his England Under-17s debut after being called up to their squad for the first time.
The youngster, who has come through the ranks at Sudbury Rugby Club and now turns out for Northampton Saints’ junior academy, enjoyed a dream first game for England Under-16s when scoring a brace of tries against London Wasps Under-17s in March.
The St Joseph’s College pupil’s continuing impressive performances have led to his rise into the under-17 set-up, where he will remain for the entire season.
Great Tey resident Beckett was set to meet up with his new national team-mates for a training camp this week as England build up to the European Championship.
Meanwhile, home club Sudbury have been enduring a torrid time in London Three North East, taking just 16 players to Canvey Island for a 28-0 defeat on Saturday.
The Essex outfit scored straight from kick-off when Sudbury knocked on, which was just the start of a poor performance and left them floundering in the bottom three.
Unable to complete any clinical attacking moves, Suds also found themselves under pressure in defence as Canvey, who started the day level on points with the Suffolk outfit, bagged themselves a bonus-point success.
Sudbury will be looking for their first win in three when they host high-flying Beccles at Whittome Field on Saturday (3pm).
Meanwhile, in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division One, second-placed Hadleigh host Woodbridge on Saturday (2.15pm), looking to build on their 26-10 win at West Norfolk at the weekend.
