Swimmers claim five golds at national championships

Sudbury masters and senior swimmers returned from the nationals in Sheffield with a haul of medals, personal bests (pbs) and east region records.

Friday started with the 1,500m freestyle, with Chris Greenhalgh striking gold with a time of 16 minutes 44.15 seconds and an east region record, in what was to be the first of five first places for the Suffolk club.

Stuart McLellan took silver and also clocked an east region record, while Sharon McLellan won a bronze medal and Terry Mansi came fourth.

In the gruelling 200m butterfly, Sarah Clarke swam in a time of three minutes 43.75secs, to claim a bronze medal and a pb, while Greenhalgh won silver in two minutes 19.05secs.

Stuart McLellan, Greenlagh and Sarah McLellan all swam the 200m breastroke with Stuart McLellan and Greenlagh both winning bronze medals.

The last evening swim for the squad that day was Mansi in one of his sprint swims, 100m freestyle, claiming his first national medal with bronze.

A very early start on the Saturday morning saw the 400m freestyle take place with Stuart McLellan taking bronze, while Sudbury’s Mansi, Greenlaugh and Sharon McLellan also had some excellent swims between them.

Clarke swam the 100m butterfly and she and Greenlaugh both swam the 100m breastroke, while Mansi had a great 50m freestyle, going on to pick up a gold medal.

The evening session saw Greenlagh and Stuart McLellan end the day with gold medals and new east region records to boot in their age groups in the 400m individual medley (IM).

On the Sunday, the team’s last day in Sheffield, Mansi won bronze and Sharon McLellan, who also sawm the 50m breaststroke, also clocked a season’s best time, both in the 200m freestyle.

In the last session of the weekend, Sarah and Stuart McLellan swam the 200m IM with Stuart breaking the east region record for gold.

He also ended the day with a silver medal in the 800m freestyle, with Mansi and Sharon McLellan also competing.

Over the weekend the five Sudbury swimmers won four golds, three silvers and seven bronze medals, while also recording five new east region records, three pbs and some excellent season best times.
