Sudbury Rugby Club’s head coach Ben Scully says he is ‘nowhere near panic stations’ — despite being bottom of the table after three games.
Suds slipped to a 17-3 defeat away at Old Priorians last weekend and are without a point from their opening three games of the London League One North campaign.
But ahead of a trip to Chelmsford this Saturday (3pm), Scully, who is yet to taste a competitive victory in charge since being appointed in the off-season, believes the wins are not far away for his newly-promoted side.
“We’re not panicking yet,” he said. “We’re good enough to stay up in this league and when we find some momentum and play the way we know we can then I’m confident the wins will come.
“We’re nowhere near panic stations. It’s coming together slowly and I’m really challenging the boys to play a new style.
“I’m putting pressure on them to not rely on me and make their own decisions.
“We’re at the start of what I see as a longer-term goal of where I want us to be and I’ve got no doubts that once we get one win, we’ll push on and win two, three, four games.”
Saturday’s opponents Chelmsford have also endured a tough start by losing all three of their first three games, but have accrued two bonus points so far.
Scully will pit his wits against his former Southend team-mate Simon Hoult when he takes his side to Chelmsford, with Hoult now their backs coach.
“They’ve had a tough start as well and both sides will be looking to get their first win,” Scully said.
“When I played at Southend, Simon was established in the first team and I was just coming up through the ranks.
“It will be good to see how he coaches his team, but we’ve got to focus on what makes us a great team and put the pressure on them.”
Sudbury are set to be without flanker Jake Thurlow (concussion) for the next few weeks, but Scully is expecting to name a strong side at Coronation Park.
“Unfortunately Jake will be missing the next two to three weeks,” he confirmed. “Whoever we bring in won’t weaken the team though and I’ll be putting out the best possible team I can to try to get a result against Chelmsford on Saturday.”
