A crew from Sudbury Rowing Club made the start line for the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta for only the second time in the club’s long history.
The men’s eight became the only Sudbury boat to qualify for the event since the landmark occasion in 2005 which marked the first since their inception in 1874 — and the first to pre-qualify.
After they finished second in their category in the Marlow Regatta on June 21, their season’s results led them to avoid the need for qualifying heats ahead of yesterday’s first-round Thames Challenge Cup races.
The crew of Nathan Franklin, Paul Sant, Jason Pryke, David Bull, Tim Hysom, James Woodward, Sam Hogsbjerg, James Brownell and cox Ella Hysom were drawn against Molesey Boat Club.
They were hoping to seal their progress into tomorrow’s second round, with the regatta at Henley-on-Thames running through the week until Sunday.
n Sudbury’s promising talent Nick Scott represented the Eastern Region in the National Junior Inter Regional Regatta at Nottingham where he came second to become the second fastest under-14 in the country.
