Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club’s Silver Trophy team continued their good start with a third league win to top League Four at the half-way stage.
But with away matches to come at Orsett and Thorpe Hall, they know it will not be easy to head the group at the end of the league stage of the competition.
A home match with Thorndon Park on Friday was always going to provide a tough test, with their opponents having already comprehensively beaten Bentley away from home 4-1.
There was bad news for Stoke when number two player Sybil Paton had to call off through an ankle injury, but they were able to display their squad strength by calling experienced Sue Latham up.
She showed her class by securing the first point for the home club with a 4&2 victory over Wendy French.
Although Jude Hanner’s match at the front of the field was proving to be tough further down, Margaret Bentley and Bev Thompson were playing well and both finished on the 14th green with 5&4 wins. The three points ensured that Stoke-by-Nayland had won the match.
Hanner took Bridget Cooper to the 18th and Sue Spittlehouse, at number five, met an in-form Hazel Argent, so the match remained 3-2 to Stoke.
n The sun and warmer conditions brought the Stoke ladies out in force to play their regular Thursday competition.
Thirty four ladies played the Constable course in Stableford competition, with the final scores not reflecting the improving conditions as the rain on the previous day slowed the roll on the ball.
Final scores: Silver division: 1st M Bentley 34 points; 2nd S Cooper 32 pts on count-back; 3rd A Hemmings 32 pts: Bronze Division: 1st R Clements 32 pts ocb; 2nd E Rew 32 pts; 3rd K Fitzgerald 31 pts.
