Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club finally got their hands on the Bronze Shield after overcoming Forrester Park in the final at Thorpe Hall Golf Club.

This was the first time for both teams to get to the final though Stoke had been very close the previous two years losing in the semi finals on both occasions.

Carol Mehrer got the team off to the perfect start, holding off a late challenge from Chris Davis to finish 2up on the 18th green, before Sue Cooper also tasted victory to give Stoke their first point of the day.

Meanwhile, Nora Hutchinson suffered a narrow defeat despite a late fight back and Maria Gilgar came out on the wrong end of a close encvounter with Jan Collier, who sealed victory with a winning putt on the 18th to level the match at two games each.

Anne Hemmings also came out on the wrong end of a tight match against Mel Kuhl who finished 2up, but Lesley Hitchcock managed to draw Stoke level again as she raced away into a three shot lead on her way to a 3-2 victory.

In the deciding match, Barbara Jones playing Colette Kingswell raced into a three shot lead which was pegged back by the 16th hole.

However, upping her game, Jones took victory on the final two holes to finish 2up, handing Stoke an overall 4-3 win and the Bronze Shield title.
