SUDBURY’S Shaun Smith was part of the Eastern Counties (EC) side that came away with the consolation shield from the Walsham Jubilee Sevens on Sunday.
EC stood up well to some much bigger and more experienced sides in a competition that saw some fast-flowing rugby played in atrocious conditions.
The team finished joint second in their group, but were relegated into the shield competition by virtue of the side from Cardiff University scoring more tries.
In the shield final, they were too fit and quick for a depleted Bury St Edmunds side.
n Meanwhile, Hadleigh’s Dale Spooner won the Eastern Counties’ groundsman-of-the-year award.
