Colchester Harrier Chris Sellens won the 21st Halstead & Essex Marathon on Sunday, finishing just under three minutes ahead of the field.

Sellens ran a superb race, coming home in 2hours 37minutes 56seconds. He made his move at 21 miles, overtaking Pere Capdevilla who had led from the start and at one time built up a seven-minute lead,

Sellens powered through, running remarkable 5:30 mile spilts, to take victory, Capdevilla finishing in 2:40:49. Third place went to Colchester Harrier Carwyn Jones in 2:43:41.

In the ladies race Nicky Tyrell from Royston Runners dominated from the off, finishing in 3:13:22, 12 minutes ahead of second-placed Christine Howard 3:25:29 from Billericay Striders. Third-placed Jennifer Jenks, RAF Triathlon Club, was a minute further behind in 3:26:09.

Organised by Halstead Road Runners, starting and finishing at Halstead Leisure centre, the marathon attracted 500 entries.

Halstead Road Runners had their fair share of outstanding performances. The experienced Bob Langley took age group honours, finishing second in the M55 category, and 80th overall, with a time of 3:36:00. He was also the first Halstead Road Runner back.

Marathon debutants John Buist (86th) and Andy Owens (99th) enjoyed their tussle, with Buist getting the better of Owens to finish in 3:37:55, Owens in 3:42:16.

Club captain Jim Clark finished in 3:45:51, 118th overall, to take 15 minutes off his previous best marathon time. Glynn Stone (180th) ran well to finish in 3:56:54.

Ian Chandler (191st), 3:59:25 and Danni Evans 190th) made their Halstead Road Runner debuts and managed to come in under four hours. Evans was the first female for the club in 3:59:11.

The ever impressive Andy Wilmot (225th) finished first in his age group of M70+ with another remarkable time of 4:07:02.

Rosie Atkins (232nd), running her 10th marathon, finished just outside her PB in 4:09:18. Club stalwart Sam Walton (260th) finished in 4:15:32. Dan Smith (325th) ran a PB, taking nearly 20 minutes off of his previous best time to finish in 4:31:08.

Another marathon debutant Joanne Roulson (341st), ran a faultless race, finishing in 4:38:17 alongside husband and fellow club member Nathan Roulson (342nd).

Second claim member Gavin Allen won his age group of M40 and was sixth overall in 2:52:17, while Jimmy Smith finished 10th in 2:57:12.
