SUDBURY Rugby Club’s exciting winger Austin Beckett will be looking to book his place on the plane to take on Italy for England’s under-16s side when he takes to the field on Sunday.
The youngster, who began in the minis at under-10 level at Whittome Field, will be aiming to impress national selectors in the contest with Wasps Academy (under-17s) in Oxford ahead of the final squad for Italy in April being announced.
Beckett was one of four Sudbury players who suffered heartbreak on narrowly missing out on reaching a Twickenham final in the National Schools’ Daily Mail Cup for Ipswich-based St Joseph’s College against Dulwich College at Broad Stret Rugby Club in Coventry.
The side was captained by Gabriel Carroll on Saturday, who is still involved at Sudbury, and also included George Murray and Mike Stanway in the squad.
St Joseph’s lost a nailbiting game watched by around 1,000 spectators, including Sudbury Rugby Club chairman Mike Beckett, father of Austin, 22-16 with the game going right down to the wire.
