Newton Green Golf Club’s juniors are on the verge of Suffolk Team Championship glory after securing their place in the final against Ufford Park.
In the quarter finals they won at Gorleston with a putt on the last hole by Ollie Page putting them through to the semi-finals.
The three-player contest is competed on the three combined Stableford points of the team. In the semis at Fynn Valley, Newton’s trio of Page, Harvey Watts and James Cooper again pulled off a narrow victory, this time against Felixstowe when the totals were 100 to 97.
Meanwhile, the club took its first step forward to retaining the Suffolk Hambro Cup, which they won for the first time in more than 40 years last summer.
After a first round bye in the county’s top handicap team event, they defeated a strong Ipswich Rushmere team by five holes in a difficult, windblown, second round encounter at Newton.
They now entertain Ipswich in the quarter finals on July 19 in what will be a repeat of last year’s final in Newton demolished the highly-fancied Purdis Heath club in the final at Woodbridge.
The experienced Russell Oakey and junior Harvey Watts were the linchpins of the home club’s success, while there were also victories for Jed Seeley, and club champion Greg Hills.
