Stoke by Nayland’s Harris Bowl team reached the quarter-finals of the Essex Ladies County Golf Association inter-club competition for the fourth year in succession, but were narrowly beaten by Epping at The Warren.

All Stoke players had to give shots to their opponents, making it a close match, with every game going to the 18th or beyond.

Catriona Chaplin gave three shots to her opponent but, after getting back to one down, lost her match two down.

Lesley Garnett gave six shots to Mel Harling.

Garnett played the best match of the season, with the score being no more than one either way.

She sunk a 20ft putt on the 16th green to square the match, won the 17th but lost the 18th to a shot, finally losing on the 20th hole.

Carol Mehrer had a close game against Stephi Cocciaguerra.

Mehrer, giving five shots, won at the 19th.

Anne Hemmings played Linda Harris and, giving four shots, had a seesaw game but finally won on the 18th, one up.

Maria Gilgar, giving five shots to Helen Gifford, was four down with four holes to play, but managed to square the match.

At the 19th both were on the green for three and sank their putts, but as Gifford had a shot on this hole she won the game.
