The Halstead and Essex Marathon, organised by Halstead Road Runners, has been voted the third best UK Marathon in a recent UK Runners World Poll.

The marathon has consistently been voted inside the top 10 over recent years and has once again outperformed the iconic London Marathon and all other UK city Marathons.

The poll is based on votes from readers of the UK’s largest running magazine Runners World.

Now in its 21st year, the event is organised solely by members of Halstead Road Runners.

Race director Keith Thorogood said: “To claim third place is just amazing, we’ve worked so hard over the past few years and pride our marathon on its personal touches and friendly atmosphere.

“For that to be recognised in such a way is very special and to have beaten all of the city marathons including London, well...”

n Wednesday’s New Year’s Eve marked an amazing year for Halstead Road Runners’ Rosie Atkins.

After only beginning running in April last year, she completed her sixth Marathon of the year in last Wednesday’s Flitch Way Marathon and knocked a huge 30 minutes off of her personal best (pb), finishing in four hours and 28 minutes.

Bob Langley also marked the day with a hugely impressive run of 3.28.

Other club results: 12th Bob Langley 3.28; 28th Lee Cullen 3.44; 108th Andy Wilmot 4.27; 110th Rosie Atkins 4.28; 174th Del Harringotn 4.53.
