London 2012: Louise Jukes begins handball campaign

FORMER Harleston Magpie hockey player Louise Jukes made her Olympic debut at the London 2012 Games last night.

The 28-year-old handball player met the queen in the build-up to Team GB’s opener with Montenegro, but despite the added inspiration the eastern Europeans proved to be too strong against a fledgling Great Britain side.

Ahead of the match, Jukes Tweeted: “Gave the queen my pin badge!!!!!!! And had a little conversation Wow!!!! So pumped!!! Bring on the game!!!”

But Team GB — who were only formed six years ago — fell short against a Montenegro side who put together a late run of goals to give the scoreline a gloss.

Before that, the home side had caused their opponents — among the favourites for gold — a number of problems with Jukes operating mainly in defence as Team GB were beaten 31-19.

Following the match, Jukes posted on Twitter: “The crowd were amazing tonight! Thank you so much everyone for coming. The loudest crowd ever!! We did our best, there’ll be more to come!!”
