Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club’s Ladies Bronze Team got their 2014 campaign off to a good start with a 7-0 victory over Canons Brook.

Both Maria Gilgar and Corinne Jackson won on the 15th hole 4&3, Anne Hemmings, Lesley Hitchock and new member Teresa Close won on the 14th green 6&4, 5&4 and 5&4 respectively.

Roz Clements had a closer match, but won on the 16th green 3&2.

Barbara Jones was given a walkover.

n Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies beat Felixstowe Ferry 3-2 at home to progress through round three of the Mail on Sunday Classic.

On the morning of the match, Stoke’s Hannah Moulwas forced to withdraw through illness, but Margaret Bentley was able to take her place.

Felixstowe arrived with a very experienced team, but the first three players of Stoke were able to put points on the board — Jude Hannah (1up), Sue Spittlehouse (4&3) and Bev Thompson (5&4).

Margaret Bentley and Sybil Paton had demanding matches, but lost 4&2 and 5&3.

However, they had the three points they needed to go through to the next round.

n Forty-seven ladies took part in the Rita Blewitt Competition last Thursday and Saturday.

The winner was Bev Thompson with 35 points.

Silver Division 0-20 handicap: Bev Thompson won with 35pts; 2 Amanda Byham 34 pts on countback; 3 Mal Went 34 points. Bronze Division 21-36 handicap: 1 Betty Cox 33 pts; 2 Bonnie Head 32 pts; 3 Penny Allen 31 pts on countback.
