On a cold, blustery and very wet New Year’s Day, 60 golfers braved the elements at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club to compete in the traditional New Year’s Day Texas Scramble Competition.

Fifteen teams of four players took part in the competition which was fiercely contested.

It wasn’t long before flying umbrellas were being chased and wet suits turned to mud suits as balance became hard to maintain.

Sand bunkers were unplayable and to putt on the greens required a great deal of ingenuity to manoeuvre the ball through numerous water puddles.

Despite this, a great day was had and there should be great praise awarded to the eventual winners Mark Howells, Daniel Mills, Colin Clark, Ian Phillips with a team score of 56.25.

Ian Carter, Paul Lankester, Duncan Smith and Suzanne Shaw Smith were the runners-up, finishing just 2.3 shots behind.
