Nico Palmer has set his sights on a future career in Formula One — and is looking for help after his dad’s illness has seen his funding slow down.
The 13-year-old from Great Cornard has seen his go-karting career rapidly progress in the last six months.
But he is in need of financial support after his dad Mark Palmer was diagnosed with heart disease in September.
While the self-employed handyman is unable to work before his upcoming heart operation, the money is not always available for the youngster to hone his skills on the racing track.
“Nico has helped me out so much at home,” he said. “Being a single parent and ill out of work, he works hard around the house.”
The Great Cornard racer has been a regular down at Anglia Indoor Kart Racing in Ipswich since the summer, and is one of the most talented drivers at the Sunday youth club.
“There’s usually 16-20 kids go to the Sunday club and the guys that run it are very helpful with him,” he continued.
Currently ranked third out of more than 90,000 people to have ever attended the all-weather circuit, Nico has quickly developed a plethora of skills on the race track.
After regularly posting 19-second laps at the circuit at the end of last year, Nico is now targeting the step up to outdoor karting and entering his first championship.
“Nico’s been wanting to do karting for a long time,” said his father. “In such a short space of time he has adapted so quickly.”
When his son is unable to go and race, Nico still goes down to the track and watches the races for hours.
The youngster’s plan to move into outdoor karts offers a greater chance of being spotted, with Nico having recently joined the Youngstarz Training Club.
The Red Lodge-based facility gives Nico the opportunity to race outdoors, with his dad hoping it will be another step towards helping Nico’s passion and talent for motorsport be fulfilled.
“A lot of kids out there have got talent but don’t get recognised,” he said. “We all try and muck in, although we are not financially stable. That’s why we need help.
“We’ve had a few people offer to help so far, and Nico is more than happy to advertise any sponsors he get on his go-kart.”
