Diss Golf Club’s Chris Bartrum, James Biggs and Josh Driver finished in 16th place with a 24-over-par combined score at the England Golf Champion Event at Trentham Golf Club in Stoke.

The 36-hole scratch strokeplay event at the weekend saw the trio, representing Suffolk, finish a place below midway from the 30 teams who played over the two days.

It saw them make a marked improvement on the county’s showing last year though, where the team finished bottom of the pile.

Their combined scores saw them finish 29 shots behind championship winners Southport and Ainsdale, who scored five under par, five shots clear of the chasing pack.

Bartrum had the best two rounds of the Diss trio, with 76 carded on Saturday followed by 72 on Sunday, leaving him four over par.

Lee Westwood Golf School pupil Biggs, 18, came in nine over par after rounds of 73 and 80.

Sixteen-year-old Driver’s 75 and 80 saw him in the clubhouse at 11 over par.

Along with teammates Darren Maskell, Archie Moore, Chris Weller, David Leeder and captain Tony Osborn, the Diss trio had entered the national competition after claiming the prestigious Stenson Shield for the first time in the club’s history, beating Stowmarket in a memorable final.
