Sunday marked the first race of the 53-12 cross country season for Halstead Road Runners with the first of the six race meeting series staged at Notley Country Park.

With more than 300 athletes from clubs across the county taking on the five-mile course, Halstead were pitted in Pool B and had a team of six ladies and 15 men.

The ladies’ team finished first and the men’s team third, meaning Halstead go straight to the top of the Pool B table.

Impressive displays once again came from Kathryn Bronson and Megan Hollinshead for the ladies and a resurgent Bradley Doe and Stewart Ellis for the men.

The cross country team will be looking to maintain their position on November 16 at Abbey Fields, Colchester.

n Marathon regulars Dan Smith, Rosie Atkins and Andy Wilmot took on the Brentwood Marathon in Weald Park on Sunday.

The 12-lap wet, muddy undulating course was testing to say the least, but all three ran solid races with Rosie Atkins even managing a personal best (pb) of four hours and 48 minutes.

Other Halstead results were: Andy Wilmot 4.31, Rosie Atkins 4.48, Dan Smith 5.09.

n Sunday also saw second claim elite member Gavin Allen complete the Stort 30 in 3.41 to finish fifth.

n Jim Leaney and Aaron Heard ran the 5k Notley Park Run on Saturday.

Leaney (25mins 36secs), who was still recovering from a broken leg, was pipped to the line by Aaron Heard (25.34).
