Mike Jones is keen to help continue Sudbury’s winning start to the season when they travel to third-placed Mistley on Saturday (1pm).
The Talbots have been victorious in their opening five matches to build-up an impressive 22-point lead at the top of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One table.
The South African-born cricketer has scored 230 runs and claimed nine wickets during those early-season successes in his debut campaign at Friars Street.
“Honestly we didn’t expect such a good start to the season,” said the overseas professional.
Sudbury maintained their unbeaten record with a one-wicket home win over Wivenhoe on Saturday.
A century from Darren Batch and 92 no from Jones helped them reach the 299-run target set by the visitors.
“That win has given us all massive confidence,” added Jones. “A chase of nearly 300 runs against a good Wivenhoe side has to be our best win of the season so far.”
Jones joined from East Anglian Premier League side Woolpit in the summer and has his eyes firmly set on helping his current club join them next season.
“I think we have what it takes to get promoted,” added the New Zealand-raised all-rounder. “I won this league with Woolpit three years ago and I believe that we should definitely be challenging for promotion this season.
“We’re 20-odd points ahead at the top, but we need to keep building on that and keep winning.”
Jones will join his teammates for the trip to Essex this weekend, a fixture which the British passport holder is expecting to be a difficult contest.
“It’s going to be a tough game for us,” added Jones. “They will be a hard to beat at their place and have some very good players in their team.
“Kyran Young is a very good player who can be a match winner for them.”
Young has racked up 21 wickets in four matches so far for the New Road-based outfit to put them third in the league.
Away from first-team duties, the former Australian professional runs coaching sessions for the junior players at the club.
“I’m absolutely loving it here,” said Jones. “The set-up is fantastic.
“The facilities are great and there is always different events going on at the club.”
