Weekend sport: Late goal ends AFC’s cup run

AFC Sudbury came to within six minutes of a replay in the FA Cup at Blue Square Bet Conference South side Eastbourne Borough on Saturday before a sickening 84th minute winner sent the Sussex side through.

Chris Tracey’s Yellows gave their higher-league opponents a real scare at Priory Lane before Gary Elphick’s late header sealed the tie to send them out of the competition.

Elsewhere, Cornard United’s miserable run continued with a 4-2 home defeat to Debenham LC, in front of a crowd of 44 at Blackhouse Lane.

But Long Melford enjoyed a 2-0 victory over March Town United in front of a crowd of 65 with goals coming from Daniel Grindrod and Chris Williamson.

Hadleigh United and Halstead Town were not in action, while Ipswich Town saw three points at Cardiff City snatched away from them after a controversial late penalty was converted by summer target Peter Whittingham, leaving the scoreline 2-2 with the Blues a point off a play-off place.

Ipswich face Portsmouth at home on Tuesday, while AFC Sudbury travel to Heybridge Swifts for the Ryman League Cup second round. Hadleigh United entertain Woodbridge Town at the Millfield the same evening (all 7.45pm).

Sudbury Rugby Club were without a match at the weekend but face Wymondham (away) on Saturday.
