AFC Sudbury saw their hopes of a memorable FA Cup run dashed in a shock 3-1 defeat to 10-men FC Romania.

The home side had looked perfectly poised to book their place in the second qualifying round and scoop a £3000 windfall as Ayrton Coley cancelled out Sorin Bugiu’s early opener before Ion Costache’s dismissal saw FC Romania reduced to 10-men in the 24th minute.

However, a dismal secon-hand half display from AFC saw the galvanised visitors snatch a surprise victory as Petru Petaru and substitute Lazar Kumanov struck to send the visitors through.

Hadleigh United’s journey in the competition also came to an end as they slipped to 4-0 defeat away at higher league opposition Billericay Town.

In the Thurlow Nunn League First Division Cornard United earned a point in a 1-1 draw with Dereham Town while Halstead Town claimed all three points at home in a 2-0 success over Needham Market Reserves.

There was also joy for Sudbury Rugby Club, who kicked off the new London Three North East campaign in winning fashion with a 16-13 victory away at West Norfolk.

In the cricket, Sudbury (249-7) concluded their Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One season with a three wicket win over Worlington (186).
