Sudbury strengthened their grip on fourth in rugby’s London Three North East after a thrilling win at fifth-placed Upminster.

Graham Richards’ men bounced back from their loss to Cantabrigian seven days earlier to win 39-35 in east London.

Hadleigh kept their promotion hopes alive in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division Two by thrashing Mildenhall and Red Lodge Eagles 65-16.

AFC Sudbury and Hadleigh United both had their football matches postponed, but Halstead Town put in a superb display in their Thurlow Nunn League First Division encounter with fellow promotion chasers Swaffham Town.

The Humbugs started the day third — one place and one point ahead of Swaffham — but a brace apiece from Jordan Hutchings and Jordan Palmer, adding to James Murray’s opener, helped the Essex side to a thumping 5-1 triumph.

In the same league, there were defeats for Cornard United and Long Melford.

In the Barclays Premier League, Norwich City were thumped 4-1 at Aston Villa, while Daryl Murphy fired Ipswich Town to their first win in a month as they overcame Birmingham City 1-0 in the Sky Bet Championship.
