Weekend round-up: AFC suffer opening day defeat to Cheshunt

AFC Sudbury’s season got off to a poor start with a 3-1 home defeat to Cheshunt, while in the cricket both Sudbury and Halstead saw their losing streaks continue.

In their first Ryman League Division One North fixture on Saturday, AFC Sudbury trailed 1-0 at the break to Jose Espinoza’s header.

And despite staging a second-half fightback, went 2-0 behind to another Espinoza striker before Leon Antonie’s 90th minute header gave them brief hope until Chehunt broke to add a third at the end of stoppage time through Matthew Mitchell.

In the Thurlow Nunn League, Hadleigh United beat Ely City 2-0 at the Millfield (att 70), while in the First Division, Long Melford drew 1-1 at home to Team Bury (att 22), Cornard United lost 4-0 at home to Downham Town (att 22) and Swaffham Town beat Halstead Town 4-1.

The opening day of the Premier League season was one to forget for Norwich City, who lost 5-0 at Fulham.

Meanwhile, in the Championship Ipswich Town came from behind to draw 1-1 with relegated Blackburn Rovers, a Jason Lowe’s own goal after 82 minutes equalising for Paul Jewell’s side.
