Weekend football: AFC overcome Grays while Halstead and Melford through in FA Vase

AFC SUDBURY passed an early test of their promotion credentials with an excellent 3-1 home victory over Grays Athletic on Saturday.

An opener from Ben Bowditch inside the first minute was cancelled out by Grays’ Jack West after 19 minutes but Bowditch hit the back of the net again after 74 mintues and Dave Bryant added a third in stoppage time.

In the FA Vase Halstead Town (2-0) and Long Melford (3-2) knocked out Basildon United and Bowers and Pitsea, both who play a league higher than them, in the first qualifying round.

But Cornard United went down to an embarrassing 11-0 defeat to Haverhill Rovers at Blackhouse Lane.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League Norwich City drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town drew 2-2 at home to Huddersfield Town.
