A last-minute goal by Scott Chaplin proved decisive in a remarkable match in which Newmarket held the lead three times.

Chaplin volleyed home a centre from Ollie Canfer to earn three points.

After three minutes, a handball office by Liam Jennings saw Jamie Thurlborne put Newmarket ahead from the spot.

James Blades converted a left-wing corner from Jennings to equalise after 17 minutes of balanced action.

Hadleigh keeper Fred Howe foiled the Jockeys three times before Ross Peterson fired the home team ahead again on the hour.

Two minutes later, Canfer burst through the middle to level for Hadleigh at 2-2 in a thrilling contest.

Keeper Howe, deputising for the injured Darren Moyes, made another fine save on his near post before Thurlborne converted a further spot kick after a handball by Shane Wardley after 77 minutes.

Sixty seconds later, a challenge by Duane Wright resulted in home keeper Craig Galbraith dropping a high centre and Canfer scored easily to make it 3-3.

Chaplin lobbed against the bar as Hadleigh pressed for a winner, but it was still anybody’s game and a share of the spoils would have been a fair outcome.

However, Canfer broke down the right to set up Chaplin’s winner with seconds remaining.
