Ridgeons teams hope for big thaw

OUR Ridgeons League teams will be hoping for some warmer weather over the weekend, so they can get out on the pitch and play some Bank Holiday Monday fixtures.

The league’s entire December 27 programme was wiped out by frozen pitches, with some intriguing matches postponed until later in the season.

Cornard United and Long Melford hope to clash in their re-arranged derby tonight (7.45pm) at Blackhouse Lane before both facing different tasks on Monday.

Bottom-of-the-table Cornard make the trip to Norfolk to visit fellow-strugglers Fakenham Town (3pm), while Melford are due to host promotion-chasing Whitton United at Stoneylands (3pm).

The two teams met at King George V Playing Fields on December 11 — both sides’ last fixture — with the game ending in a resounding 7-1 victory for Whitton.

In the Premier Division, Hadleigh United have an early kick-off against CRC (midday).

On New Year’s Day, in Ryman League Division One North, AFC Sudbury host Heybridge Swifts at the MEL Group Stadium (3pm).

Former AFC striker Tom English currently turns out for the Essex side and leads their scoring charts.
