Portman Road dream ends in heartbreak for Long Melford

AN 89th-minute winner for Whitton United broke Melford hearts at Portman Road as their dreams of lifting the Suffolk Senior Cup vanished.

SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP FINAL

Long Melford 1 Whitton United 2

AFTER a goalless first half where Melford had the better chances despite Whitton seeing more of the ball, a precise angled drive by Jamie Williams put the west Suffolk side ahead three minutes after the interval.

Wave-after-wave of Whitton attacks were repelled by a defence commanded throughout by the impressive Errol Durrel before they were finally breached in the 66th minute when Chris Williams struck, despite calls for the ball bobbling up and hitting his hand.

But with extra-time looming, a goalkeeping error from Paul Wood saw substitute Alan Mill’s speculative low shot from the edge of the area squirm underneath him at his near post to spark wild celebrations and heartache for Melford.
